Timothy Moore has been a financial journalist for more than two decades. He is also a regular contributor to Toronto-based Triathlon Magazine Canada. The idea for this book came from a story he wrote for San Diego-based Triathlete magazine’s June 2008 issue about the then pending assault on Paula Newby-Fraser’s 1994 record of 8:50:53. The record was smashed weeks after the story was published.

I wrote the first draft of this book in eight days straight in April 2009 and then spent four solid months rewriting, revising, polishing and proofing it. It's a personal account with thoughts on writing, running and life and also provides 33 writing exercises for writers needing inspiration and encouragement. (Published May 2010).

To improve as writers we have to hone our skills by putting words on the page, consistently. The 33 exercises in this book will help you do just that. A Work in Progress: Exercises in Writing started as a personal challenge that helped me win the struggle with my first book Running Shoes Are a Girl's Best Friend. Combining advice and encouragement from my favourite books on writing I committed to producing 2000 words a day for 10 consecutive days. I wrote for quantity and found the result had potential quality. This is my third book. Let's get started on yours!

Author Margreet Dietz has often been asked why she runs. An accomplished marathoner now, she could barely jog for five minutes when she started in 1996.

This book relates the shared experience that running is for women. Some run for the simple pleasure it brings, while others race for finish lines. Some run with friends, while others run alone.

Marathons in Ottawa, Vancouver (3 including 2011 Top Master woman) and Victoria (2 including 2011 Top Master woman), Canada; Honolulu, Death Valley and the Olympic Peninsula (women's champion and course record in 2009) and the Bellingham Bay Marathon (women's champion 2011), the United States; Sydney, Canberra (age group win) and the Gold Coast (3), Australia and Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

Ironman triathlon finishes in Forster, Australia (3); Taupo, New Zealand and Frankfurt, Germany. Other races include the STORMY 50-mile trail ultra, 100km Haney to Harrison road ultra, Six Foot Track 45km (trail run) in the Blue Mountains, Australia; 100km Oxfam Trailwalker in Sydney; and numerous shorter running and triathlon events since the 20km of Brussels in May 1997.

Hiking

The remote North West Circuit, a 125km (78 miles) trail that will test even the most optimistic and fit hikers over 10-11 days. It's wet, muddy, slippery and there's no backing out of this one except by retracing your steps. But the spectacular scenery is well worth it.

Other trails include the West Coast Trail, Vancouver Island, Canada; part of the Larapinta Trail, The Outback, Australia; the South Coast Track, Tasmania, Australia; the Overland Track, Tasmania, Australia; the Inca Trail, Peru. In 2005, two months of hiking in New Zealand included the North West Circuit on Stewart Island, the Routeburn Track, the Kepler Track, the Abel Tasman Coastal Track, a part of the Travers-Sabine Circuit to Angelus Hut, an overnight hike to Mueller Hut near Mt Cook.

Many day hikes and shorter overnight hikes in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, South Africa, Indonesia and the Cook Islands.
